Design subscriptions explained: how they work and who they’re for.

The basic idea

You pay a flat monthly fee. In return, you get ongoing access to a design team. Not for a fixed project, not by the hour, but as an always-on resource you can direct toward whatever you need.

Think of it less like commissioning a painting and more like having a senior designer (or two) sitting alongside your team. You point them at problems. They solve them. You iterate. Repeat.

The key difference from traditional agency work: there’s no project end date, no scope document, and no re-negotiation every time your needs change. You stay subscribed for as long as you need it, meeting your requirements without being bound by complex contracts or strict deadlines.

How the request queue works

When you subscribe to Butter, you get access to a shared Trello board where you submit design requests. You keep a backlog of everything you want to work on, and you control what's active at any given time. Only one request sits in the active slot at once. We work on it, deliver within a few business days, and once you're happy you mark it done and move the next item from your backlog into the active slot.

One active request at a time means we’re fully focused on what matters most to you right now, not splitting attention across five half-finished things. It’s a feature, not a limitation. Work that gets proper focus gets done properly.

Your backlog, though, is unlimited. Load it up with everything you’re thinking about: future landing pages, icon sets, a rebrand direction, a research sprint.

What "a few business days" actually means

Most requests are done and back with you within 72 hours. More complex ones may take longer, and we’ll always be upfront about that.

This only works because we’ve structured how requests come in. A good request has a clear goal, the relevant context, and any assets we need to get started. When that’s in place, we can move fast. When it’s not, we’ll ask, but that adds a round-trip.

Which plan is right for you?

We have two plans: Growth and Accelerate, along with a standalone Design Feedback Session if you want to start smaller. Each is built for a different stage and working style.

What a subscription isn’t

It’s not unlimited in the sense that you’ll get 40 screens in a week. It’s unlimited in the sense that there’s no cap on your backlog, no per-asset pricing, and no scope that expires.

It’s also not a fire-and-forget service. We work best when there’s real back-and-forth: when you’re available to give feedback, make decisions, and stay in the loop. If you want someone to disappear with your brief and come back in three weeks with a finished product, that’s not us.

The clients who get the most out of Butter are the ones who treat us like part of their team. Because that’s how we think of ourselves.

Is a subscription right for you?

A subscription makes sense when design is an ongoing need, not a one-time project. If you’re building a product, growing a SaaS, or managing a brand that keeps evolving, you’ll always have something in the queue. A flat monthly cost with senior-level output is almost always better value than re-hiring for each new thing.
